SYMPTOMS

Speakers not automatically powering off after 20-minute wait period.

CAUSE

Possible outside interference causes the speakers to stay on or to power on by themselves. Speakers may be defective.

RESOLUTION

Although no resolution exists at this time, Altec Lansing gives the following explanations based on their research.

  • The automatic power on/off feature should shut down the speakers within an average of 30 minutes after the loss of the audio signal. Due to the input sensitivity of this feature, static electricity in the room can keep the speakers from powering down for longer periods of time.
  • In Altec Lansing's testing, shut down times ranged from 10 to 40 minutes.
  • The speakers were activated with a HAM radio from about 3 feet away. Items such as cordless phones, cellular phones, electrical line noise or popping can cause them to power on and/or stay on.
  • Unplugging the speakers from the sound card will cause them to come on.
  • The speakers may power off at some point but then could be reactivated by an outside source at a later point in time.
  • Only the satellite speakers will turn off. The subwoofer remains on, and therefore may generate a slight hum.
