SYMPTOMS

The following message appears when starting Microsoft® Windows NT®:

  • "At least one service or driver failed to load during startup. See Event Viewer for details."
The Event Viewer will show the following:
  • Event ID: 7000
  • Source: Service Control Manager
  • Category: None
  • Description: The ATI VIDC service failed to start due to the following error. A device attached to the system is not functioning


CAUSE

The ATI video drivers were installed from the ATI driver CD using the Quick Install option. This installs a multilingual driver which causes the error message.


RESOLUTION

  1. Log on to Windows NT as an "Administrator".
  2. From the desktop screen, click on the "Start" button.
  3. Select "Settings".
  4. Click on the "Control Panel".
  5. Double-click on "Devices" icon within the "Control Panel".
  6. Locate and select "ATI VIDC" from the listed devices.
  7. Click on the "Startup" button.
  8. Select "Disabled".
  9. Click on the "OK" button.
  10. Click on the "HW Profiles" button.
  11. Click on the "Disabled" button.
  12. Click on the "OK" button.
  13. Restart the computer.
The error message should no longer appear.
