MidWest Micro: Installing An Infotel 10/100 Mbps PCI Ethernet Adapter
Installing An Infotel 10/100 Mbps PCI Ethernet Adapter

Article ID: 1 Last Updated:May 22, 2025
Operating System(s): DOS,WIN3X,WIN95 infoFax Document #:2000

To configure this card for Windows® 3.11 follow these directions:

  1. With the power off, open the computer case.
  2. Insert the Infotel 10/100 Mbps PCI Ethernet Adapter into an empty PCI slot.
  3. Plug the network cable into the intended port.

NOTE: While running a 10 Mbps connection, the cable must be plugged into the 10 Mbps port on the back of the Ethernet adapter. To take advantage of a 100 Mbps connection you must not only have cabling that supports a 100 Mbps connection, but the entire network must be running a 100 Mbps connection.

  4. Turn on the computer's power.
  5. Enter into the system's CMOS (BIOS) settings.

NOTE: On most systems pressing either the [DEL] or [F1] key while booting will enter the CMOS. Ignore any error messages that occur while the system is booting.

  6. Make sure the CMOS' Plug-n-Play (PnP) PCI settings are correctly configured.

NOTE(1): For motherboards such as Intel or ASUS, a PCI adapter will not reserve an IRQ if the PnP PCI settings are set to either "Used By ISA" or "None". If the system BIOS does not have PnP options, this adapter will not work.

NOTE(2): In some CMOS' (like on the UM8810 motherboard) it is necessary to specify which IRQ will be used for the PCI slot. If this is the case, select a free IRQ for the intended PCI slot. To determine which PCI slot the adapter occupies, refer to the motherboard manual.

  7. Once the changes to the CMOS have been made, save the changes.
  8. The computer will now reboot.
  9. When the message "Starting MS-DOS" appears, press and hold down the left [SHIFT] key until the "C:\>" prompt appears.
  10. Insert the supplied driver disk into the computer's floppy disk drive.
  11. Type: A: and press the [ENTER] key.

NOTE: If the driver disk is the "B:" drive, type: B: and press the [ENTER] key.

  12. Type: CD \DIAG and then press the [ENTER] key.
  13. Type: DIAG and press the [ENTER] key.
  14. The program will perform a self-test to make sure the adapter is working properly.

NOTE: You must have the adapter correctly plugged into the network for the DIAG program to function properly.

  15. After the self-test sucessfully completes, remove the disk from the floppy disk drive and press the [CTRL][ALT][DEL] keys simultaneously or press the reset button on the front of the computer. If the adapter fails the self-test, repeat steps 1-15 to verify the adapter is installed correctly.
  16. After the computer has finished booting, start Windows® 3.11 if necessary.
  17. Locate the "Network" group in "Program Manager" and double-click on it.
  18. Double-click on the "Network Setup" icon.
  19. Left-click on the box marked "Network".
  20. Left-click on the text "Install Microsoft Windows Network:".
  21. Left-click the "OK" button.
  22. Left-click on the box marked "Drivers...".
  23. Left-click on the box marked "Add Adapter...".
  24. Left -click on the option "Unlisted or Updated Network Adapter".
  25. Insert the driver disk into the floppy disk drive.
  26. Type: [DRIVE LETTER]:\WFW311 and press the [ENTER] key. (Where the [DRIVE LETTER] is the drive letter of the floppy disk drive.)
  27. Choose the "32-Bits 100Mbps PCI Ethernet adapter" driver.
  28. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.
  29. A prompt to restart the computer appears. Answer "Yes".
  30. When the system has rebooted, close all open programs and turn off the computer's power.
  31. Close the computer's case.
  32. The Infotel 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PCI Adapter is now properly installed.

To configure this card for Windows® 95 follow these directions:

  8. The computer will now reboot.
  9. When the message "Starting Windows 95" appears, press and hold down the left [SHIFT] and [F5] keys simultaneously until the "C:\>" prompt appears.

  16. After the PCI Ethernet adapter is installed and Windows® 95 has been loaded, the system will detect the adapter as a "Plug and Play DEC Ethernet card". The drivers will be automatically loaded and no additional configuration is needed.
  17. Perform a shut-down, and turn off the computer's power.
  18. Close the computer case.
  19. The Infotel 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PCI Adapter is now properly installed.
