How do I add another hard drive to my system?
Several documents are available through our infoFax fax-on-demand service that give step-by-step instructions for installing a hard drive. For installing a new drive into a system, request document 6001. If adding another hard drive to the system, request document 6002.

I want to run AutoCAD on my computer. What do I need?
Contact the manufacturer of the CAD package in question to find out exactly what the system requirements are. The software manufacturer will be able to list the recommended amount of memory and what video card will work best. A list of known hardware incompatibilities can be requested from them, too.

Where can I get the AutoCAD video driver for my video card?
Check the video card manual for installing the AutoCAD driver. Most video cards already have the AutoCAD driver included on diskette. If not, refer to the manual for instructions on receiving the driver.

How do I get my 3-Button Mouse to work with Windows® 95? It worked fine with Windows 3.x.
Windows® 95 does not include a wide-spread 3-button mouse compatible driver. Set the mouse to 2-button mode (sometimes referred to as MC for Microsoft Compatible) to use the mouse with Windows 95. Windows applications only take advantage of 2-button mice.

How can I resolve the 2F8 COM port conflict I receive when I turn on the computer?
This conflict is caused when the modem conflicts with an existing COM port in the computer. This usually happens when the modem is set to COM 2, and the system's BIOS tries to enable the COM 2 port on the back of the computer. Disable COM 2 in the BIOS to resolve the problem. Follow the instructions below to disable the COM 2 port. (This will work for most computer systems.)

  • Enter the system's BIOS.
  • Go to the "ADVANCED SYSTEM SETUP" menu, and then go to the "INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS" menu.
  • Set the "COM 2" option (sometimes listed as "COM B") to "DISABLED".
  • Save the changes and exit out of the BIOS.

What is the fastest processor I can upgrade to?
Refer to the manual to find out which is the fastest processor the system's motherboard can handle. If the manual doesn't seem to make sense, then call our Technical Support staff and they'll be able to determine which is the fastest processor that can be used.

I can't get my new games to run in Windows® 95. What do I need to make it work?
Most new games come with instructions for use with Windows® 95, so refer to those instructions first. If, however, the game is older or has no Windows 95 instructions, contact the software manufacturer for installation tips. Download the file 95CDBOOT.EXE. This program will reboot the computer to MS-DOS mode with both sound and CD-ROM support, but we can't guarantee that it works on all systems.

I can't print to my printer; my printer is giving me an LPT error.
These errors can occur if the parallel port is disabled or set for an incorrect address. The following procedure will ensure that the parallel port is configured properly.

  • Enter the system's BIOS and go to the "CHIPSET FEATURES SETUP" menu.
  • Enable the LPT port and set the address to 378H.
  • Set the "PARALLEL PORT MODE" option to "NORMAL".
  • Save the changes and exit the BIOS.

    For Windows 95® users.

  • Go to the CONTROL PANEL.
  • Double-click on the "SYSTEM" icon and go to the DEVICE MANAGER tab.
  • Go to the PORTS (COM and LPT) section and left-click on the LPT port option.
  • Left-click the "RESOURCES" button and set the Interrupt to "07".
  • For Hewlett-Packard printers, all currently installed HP drivers must be removed and reinstalled before the printer will function correctly.

Where can I find the latest drivers for the hardware in my computer?
Feel free to check both our BBS and our Ftp site for the latest drivers for all the components in your system. We update the files regularly and always keep the latest revisions of drivers and BIOSs available for downloading. And most manufacturers will send you the latest drivers-free. Contact the hardware manufacturer's customer service department for specific policies and procedures for receiving updated drivers.

What Overdrive™ processor is the right one for my computer?
Choosing the right Overdrive processor depends on the motherboard in the computer. If you know what type of motherboard is in the computer, Intel offers an on-line compatibility database of pre-tested motherboards that work with the Overdrive processors. This database can be found at Intel's World Wide Web site at http://www.intel.com. If the motherboard manufacturer is unknown, contact our Technical Support staff and they'll be able to determine which Overdrives can be used.

How do I install memory in my computer?
The following is a very generic walk-through for installing memory in a computer. The walk-through will work for both 30-pin and 72-pin SIMM modules.

  1. Turn the computer off.
  2. Remove the computer's case.
  3. Find the SIMM sockets on the motherboard. The SIMM sockets are typically all white and made out of plastic.
  4. Be sure to ground yourself, and remove the SIMM module(s) from its/their package.
  5. Install the SIMM module(s) by inserting it/them at a 45 degree angle into an available SIMM socket and pushing them upright. The module will click when in place.
  6. Repeat steps 4-5 for each SIMM module.
  7. Once all of the SIMM modules have been installed, turn the computer on.
  8. A "Memory Size Mismatch" error will occur when the system comes on.
  9. Enter the computer's BIOS.
  10. Enter the "STANDARD" menu and immediately return to the main menu.
  11. Save the changes and exit. The memory is installed.
