SYMPTOMS

An extra display adapter (SiS 5597/5598) appears in the "Device Manager." The modem will not install properly to COM2.

CAUSE

The on-board VGA option is not disabled.

RESOLUTION

Some of PCs come with a graphics card installed (in addition to the on-board video). The on-board VGA must be set to "Disabled." Follow the steps below to disable the on-board VGA. You will need to refer to the motherboard manual included with your PC for assistance with these steps.

  1. Shut Down the computer and remove the power cord.
  2. Remove the PC's case cover.
  3. Locate the tiny set of pins labeled "JP23."
  4. Cover pins "2" and "3" of "JP23" with the small piece of plastic (or jumper), located on the pins.
  5. Locate the tiny set of pins labeled "JP24."
  6. Cover pins "1" and "2" with the plastic jumper.
  7. Locate the tiny set of pins labeled "JP25."
  8. Cover pins "2" and "3" with the plastic jumper.
  9. Verify that the VGA Connector cable is not connected and is removed from the PC.
  10. Replace the PC's case cover and return the power cord to the back of the PC.
  11. Power on the computer.

The extra display adapter should disappear and the modem should automatically configure to COM2.
