QWERTY The layout of most English Language typewriters and computer keyboards. The word QWERTY is taken from the first six alpha keys on the left hand side. The original layout was designed in an attempt to separate letters that often appear in the English Language close together, because when struck at nearly the same moment, they were likely to jam the type bars as they came close to one other when they approached the typewriter ribbon.
